Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

If you grew up in an African household you most likely grew up knowing never to waste things. Some would even go on to say that the act of upscaling, an act that is being so popularized now, has been imbedded in African culture ever since.

Many African designers have continued the practice of recycling in their creations.  Cameroon brand Nyorh Agwe has taken the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” motto to the next level reinventing waste into unimaginably chic creations. Under the brands recycling project “Leftovers” Nyorh Agwe designs accessories that continues to explore traditional Metta culture arts with unconventional materials in unconventional ways.

The company uses the project collective as a way to recycle waste from past collections and even past experiences. Because the materials used are often limited and cannot be reproduced more than once the pieces retain their one of a kind value. Each creation reflects an unrepeatable moment in time concealing  its spontaneity and uniqueness.

The project has been seen in publications such as New African Woman Magazine, Okay Africa, Style Vitae, and more. Nyorh Agwe has hopes of expanding the project to get others involved in recycling. “We all love fashion but let’s be honest, the Fashion Industry is one of the most detrimental industries to our environment. We have to continue to make changes to shift our practices and this has to be a collective effort in order for it to be impactful.”
