Designer to watch: Kepha Maina

As the African fashion industry grows immensely it can get a little crowded. Designers from all over the continent are striving to showcase their talents to the world and push for their voices to be heard. One rising African designer whose clothes speak for themselves is Kenyan designer Kepha Maina.

Kepha Maina just released his Spring/Summer 2016 Collection and it is unlike anything seen before. There is a heavy presence of geometric influence throughout the collection inspired by African art over time. Kepha Maina design process is comparable to the art of collaging. It allows him to work freely and experiment with texture and technique as he is creating. This results in a number of exciting combinations and takes into consideration the entirety of the look in 360. Seems weave in and out of one another creating a pattern within itself and triangular shapes repeat either in silhouette or construction. The back may not be the same as the front and the front may not be the same as the side. The asymmetric value of the collection brings excitement to the eyes and a playful element to the clothes. Check out his SS16 collection below.
